Plans are well underway to celebrate OCAV’s 150th anniversary next year.
A range of celebrations is being organised to mark the historic milestone including a history road show, village open days, and the inaugural George Coppin lecture.
Phillip Wohlers, CEO of OCAV, said the initiatives focus on the extraordinary contribution of the Association and the part it has played over the past 150 years in providing accommodation and support for older Victorians in need.
“We look to our heritage to showcase what has been achieved whether it is pioneering nursing care, supporting independent older people in community-style housing, or highlighting he significant role that our residents, staff and volunteers have or had in our lives and our communities,” he said.
“2019 is also the year to look to the future which is full of potential from our growing research portfolio, ambitions to create additional villages, and our increasing profile in the industry,” Mr Wohlers said.
The year’s celebrations will start on Monday 1 July, Founders Day. Open days will be held on Saturday 5 October at Braeside Park; Sunday 20 October at Leith Park and Liscombe House; Sunday 27 October at Rushall Park; and 23 November at Currie Park.
“Each open day will have a different feel and flavour to mark every village’s individuality,” Mr Wohlers said.
One of the highlights of the year will be a history exhibition that focuses on the people of OCAV throughout its 150 years. The exhibition will travel to each village as well as be staged in a major Melbourne venue.
Other highlights will be the unveiling of stunning needlework piece put together by Rushall Park residents; the launch of a book by resident Sue Course about her family’s escape from Nazi Austria; and the opening of stage one of the Leith Park new units.
Events and how to become involved will be placed on the website in early 2019.
