All I want for Christmas this year is a safe and happy time for everyone. One where we are surrounded by family and loved ones, and without having an endless conversation about COVID-19. I am sure that I speak for all of us.

There is little doubt that 2021 has been yet another challenging year for us as an organisation and as individuals. We have been up and down in lockdown throughout the year, each time seemed to be harder and more exhausting than the last. In between, many of us have been fearful of coming out of our front doors while others have made the most of it.

What 2021, as in 2020, has shown me is how kind the OCAV community is and how resilient and resourceful we are. Whether that has been making meals, biscuits, sharing walks, writing, painting, or gardening – everyone has found something that has brought them meaning.

I am always reminded though, that Christmas is not always joyful for many of us. Many people struggle with a greater sense of isolation and loneliness during the holidays. Equally, I know how our staff and residents ‘watch out’ for everyone with many ‘solo’ residents being invited to take part in other residents’ celebrations.

This newsletter contains many heart-warming stories of care and hope. Regardless of COVID-19, everyone has been trying to maintain a sense of normalcy whether through work or getting on with what they love doing.

I always loved reading the stories about our residents, what they did before arriving at their village, and how they keep busy and connected in retirement. We have fabulous stories in this newsletter which reveal the many different passions that our residents and staff enjoy.

It is a real privilege to work for OCAV, and I take this opportunity to thank you all – our supporters, residents, staff and volunteers – for the contribution each one of you makes.

May you all have a peaceful, gentle and happy festive season, and here’s to 2022 – we hope it will be a less dramatic one than this year.

With warm wishes

Phillip
