On Sunday 30 November 2024, despite the enormous downpour of rain, the Leith Park community gathered in the Herb Garden to unveil the “Tree of Life” mosaic, a stunning collaborative artwork created by residents over the past year. The event, held alongside the Market Day, celebrated the creativity, connection, and dedication of those involved in bringing this unique project to life.
What began as a mosaic workshop hosted by Eltham Bunnings in 2023 soon inspired residents to form the Leith Park Mosaic Group, meeting weekly in “The Bunker” under the mentorship of Jacquie Hacansson. Over 12 months, residents handcrafted intricate clay pieces and incorporated donated trinkets, making the mosaic a personal reflection of the community. Sustainability also played a key role, with materials sourced from Austin Hospital Op Shop in Diamond Creek, thanks to the efforts of residents Lynn and Graham Edwards.
During the unveiling, Abound Communities CEO Katherine Burton praised the group’s dedication and creativity, highlighting the friendships and joy the project fostered.
Now proudly displayed in the Herb Garden, the “Tree of Life” is more than just an artwork, it is a symbol of the vibrant, connected community of Leith Park, to be admired and enjoyed for years to come.
Well done to everyone involved!
