SEK Hulme Community Centre and apartments open

June 20, 2019

The $8 million SEK Hulme Community Centre and 26 independent and assisted living apartments were opened at Rushall Park in 2013. The community centre quickly became the hub of the village, and was named after one of OCAV’s longest serving councillors and vice presidents.

Offering dining and lounge facilities, rooms for visiting health professionals, an activities’ centre, library and computer facilities, the new development was designed by William Boag Architects (WBa). It replaced the previous hostel and Residential care.

WBa’s planning focused on ensuring the integrity of the historic site’s urban design and amenity, whilst designing a contemporary building.

According to their description: “This careful attention to site provided areas of north-facing open space for residents to enjoy and sheltered walkways allowing for access across the site. Subtly referential polychromatic brickwork allows the new forms to respond to the unique historical setting and become a part of the established landscape.”

Dorothy Clayton has felt very much ‘at home’ since she moved into Braeside Park nine years ago. Now, Dorothy, the village’s volunteer pastoral care worker, tries to ensure that others also feel a sense of belonging in the Berwick village.
