Whenever Meryl Van Donkelaar has spare time, she inevitably reaches for her knitting needles or crochet hook to create something.

Meryl has been a familiar face at Liscombe House for almost twelve years. She started as a Personal Care Assistant after doing her training, working casually initially as well as some occasional cleaning. When she became permanent, she worked both as a PCA on evening shifts and two days cleaning.

“I wanted to do something for myself, and I wanted to work in aged care as I knew from having elderly parents, the difference I could make,” Meryl said.

“Since working here, I have met many like-minded people who care and contribute their talents in many different ways.”

Meryl is not one to stand or sit still. She completed a dementia course a couple of years ago. This April, she began volunteering in addition to working at Liscombe House.

“I started the fortnightly Knit and Natta group with knitting-loving residents, and love the chance to share patterns, ideas, and time to chat. Work is busy, but the group gives me the opportunity to socialise and get to know everyone better. It has been a productive use of lockdown,” Meryl said.

She has been knitting and crocheting on and off since a teenager whenever she could get the time. She was taught by her mother and grandmother, both of whom knitted up everything the family ever needed.

“Currently as a group we are planning to knit something to go on display at Liscombe House. I also have several things going from a pack of little dogs which are popular to a display of pumpkins and critters, and trying my hand at knitted birds,” Meryl said.

Outside Liscombe House and at home, there is nothing more that Meryl enjoys than a natter on the phone with family and friends. On the other hand, there is always baking to be done, or a walk to be had.

“I love being busy and I enjoy being able to help where I can.”
